Climbing in Austria


One of the spare time activities you can pursue in Tyrol is climbing. Climbing is a very interesting sport for people who prefer the direct contact with mountains and nature.
Contrary to the popular opinion, climbing is very easy to learn and you don't need to train for years to get strong arms and legs like Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Free-climbing:
Is climbing without any devices except special shoes.
Free-climbing is only recommended for people with experience in climbing. It is only for people who enjoy the thrill.

What you need for free climbing as a sport:

special shoes (very light with a special smooth sole) a few karabiners and climbing-ropes of different strengths for your own safety it is very important to wear a helmet

Some climbing areas near Innsbruck are:
Klettersteig Nordkette. Length: 3.300 meters, time to climb: 4,5 h
ascent: 600 m, descent 650 m.
In this area you better already have some experience in climbing.
For beginners:
Klettersteig Absam: 10 km east of Innsbruck
Klettersteig Martinswand: 5 km west of Innsbruck

For people who prefer an easy walk in the mountains we have got many hiking-trails in the mountains around Innsbruck.
So if you would like to really get in contact with the mountains try some climbing in the Tyrolean mountains!
