COOL KINDS OF SPORTS

Of course you can practise all kinds of sports here, but we would like to inform you about what you should not miss in Tyrol.

Tyrol is the most popular country for skiing. Our skiers are well-known all over the world, e. g. Franz Klammer, Toni Seiler, Pepi Strobl, aso.

Here the three most important ski regions:

INNSBRUCK (six ski areas around Innsbruck, including the Stubai glacier)

KITZBÜHEL (well known for its breath-taking "Streif")

ST. ANTON (here you will be able to enjoy the World Championship in 2001)

For beginners we recommend:

  • Gschwandt Kopf, 30 km west of Innsbruck
  • Rangger Köpfl, 20 km west of Innsbruck
  • Axamer Lizum, 20 km south of Innsbruck
  • Mutterer Alm , 10 km south of Innsbruck
For experienced skiers:
  • Hochzeiger, 70 km west of Innsbruck
  • Rosshütte, 30 km west of Innsbruck
  • Patscherkofel, 10 km east of Innsbruck
  • Nordkette, near the centre of Innsbruck
  • Ischgl, 100 km west of Innsbruck
  • Kühtai, 50 km west of Innsbruck
  • Sölln, 150 km west of Innsbruck

What you need for skiing:

A pair of skis, special ski-boots, ski poles, warm clothes and gloves.

Skiing is the national pastime for us. But now the younger ones also love to go snowboarding. You can go snowboarding wherever you can go skiing. Snowboarding is a great sport but the very best are the events. These are competitions with freestyling on halfpipes and sometimes, in the evening, there are snowboard-parties with famous DJs or singers. These parties last until the morning. The best freestylers get a prize and are the special guests on these parties.

If you want to know more about this sport please read the article about snowboarding (link zu snowboarding ) by one of my collegues.

But if you don't like snowboarding, maybe I can inform you about another famous winter sport.

Cross-country-skiing isn't only a sport for older people. Young people love to do it too. For this sport you need special skis which aren't as wide as normal ones, and you also need longer ski poles. Cross country skiing is the sport for those who don't like down hill ski runs. If you are a nature lover you must try it.

Sledging is the fun sport for groups. But it isn't only about going down a slope on a sledge, here in Tyrol it is more than that. You climb up a mountain slope together with a group of other people. Then you have a hearty meal in a "Hütte". You drink a glass of wine or some tea to warm up. And when the night has fallen, everybody sledges down the hill. I am sure you will enjoy yourself and you will make a lot of new friends.

If you want to know more about this sport please read the article about sledging by one of my collegues.

And then there are horse-drawn sleigh-rides! You can take a ride in a horse-drawn sleigh through the beautiful Tyrolean countryside and stop at a cosy alpine inn and enjoy a glass of "Glühwein".

Or try the Olympic Bob-sleigh Run! The Olympic Bob-sleigh Run is in Igls near Innsbruck. An experienced bob pilot takes you through the run. Everyone who dares to go down receives a certificate. You can try the bob-sleigh run every winter till February.

Rafting

Where can you go rafting?
In the Lech river, (2 driving hours from Innsbruck)
In the "Ötztaler Ache". (20 minutes driving time from Innsbruck)

What awaits you?
A beautiful mountain torrent with white foamy water.

A thrilling experience in jolly company.
